We’ve mentioned here before how back on the 27th of August an American woman named Anne Sacoolas allegedly drove out of a US air force facility in the UK on the wrong side of the road and then allegedly was involved in a crash that killed a young motorcyclist, Harry Dunn. Ms Sacoolas was questioned by the police, claimed diplomatic immunity and said that she would remain in the country. In the event her employers advised her to get out fast and she promptly did so. The affair has caused something of a storm in the UK and the politicians have become involved with pressure on the Americans to waive immunity. It’s now escalated to that nice Mr Trump who was pictured holding a briefing note reading “(If raised) Note, as Secretary Pompeo told Foreign Secretary Raab, that the spouse of the US government employee will not return to the United Kingdom.”
Here’s what that Mr Trump had to say on the matter:
“The woman was driving on the wrong side of the road, and that can happen.
“You know, those are the opposite roads, that happens. I won’t say it ever happened to me, but it did.
“So a young man was killed, the person that was driving the automobile has diplomatic immunity, we’re going to speak to her very shortly and see if we can do something where they meet.”
What all that means is as much your guess as mine but the chances of the victim’s family getting anything like justice are about those of the proverbial snowball in Hell.
