On Saturday, May 11th, in the Year of our Pork 2019, I was fortunate to make the pilgrimage to Luftgekühlt 6. I’d never been to one, but now that I’m a Luftyfooler I figured it was imperative. I was a little apprehensive because I tend to shy away from “scenes” and am not a car show guy, but this was so accessible and open, and the passion for these cars and the people around them so thoroughly ingrained in the event that my worries immediately melted away. Held at Universal Studios’ famed backlot, it was all I imagined and more, and I won’t miss another. I don’t know how they’d top this venue, it really created a special atmosphere. Especially up in the “Mexico” and “Wild West” sets, it was a very cool vibe, like a big family party. I was fortunate to meet many people I’ve only heard of or known from the internet, including our own Philipilihp, who flew across the country to immerse himself in LA car culture. It was a privilege to spend the day with him, look for his coverage on Live And Let Diecast.
This was also the first “big” trip for my SC, compounding my unjustified worries with justified ones about stranding myself somewhere. I prepared best I could, with a full complement of tools, fluids, and spares for likely failure items. Fortunately, those fears also proved to be unfounded because the car ran like a train, returning 23mpg over nearly 500 miles. I couldn’t be happier with the car or my experience at Luft 6. Others, professionals, have covered Luft to no end on the front page and across the great expanse of the interwebs, but I hope you find this interesting and maybe see some cars not shared elsewhere. On to the pictures:

PS: Rennfilms put out this great little short on the buildup & trip to Luft, worth the watch. The feeling that our time with these machines is slipping away is real, I think about it regularly and it’s part of what drove me to do everything possible to get my car. Smoke ‘em while you got ‘em...
