Being Old and Vaguely Responsible Sucks

Well, I struck out on trying to acquire an Isuzu VehiCROSS, which sucks, but I’m still saying goodbye to the Celica race car on Saturday, which also kinda sucks. I’m actually trading it straight up for something somewhat useable and which is juuuuust interesting enough for me for now.

A 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. I believe its a GLS, since its got leather and a (slightly broken) sunroof. 1.8T, 5 speed, 160k or so miles. Runs and drives, needs a few small things but it’ll function as a spare car/work beater. My commute is about 50 miles a day, and this will save me some money over my 15mpg Chevy Tahoe.

The wheels are awful, I know. The rest of it looks solid enough. My research indicates that the 2001 1.8T, while rated at 150hp like the 2000 1.8T, is basically identical to the more powerful 2002 1.8T. With a computer upgrade, the 2001 and 2002 make the same power....a stage 2 tune makes 235hp, which is kinda bananas to me on an otherwise-stock car but sure sounds like a lot of fun.

Anyway, the guy I’m getting it from is trailering it to me Saturday and taking the Celica. I’m still looking for a VehiCROSS though, as I suspect I will be for the rest of my life.
