The Valkyrie was designed with adjustable wingtips that could be lowered to take advantage of compression lift, where additional lift was generated by high-pressure air coming off the front of the airplane. On June 8, 1966, this XB-70 was involved in a famous midair collision that killed one of the Vakyrie pilots and the pilot of an accompanying aircraft.
