Reddit’s Just Rolled into the Shop is a veritable cornucopia of the many wonders and oddities of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.
Got eem!
So I took it apart. The booster pushes on the piston going into the master. The piston has fluid filled behind it in the master, and has two rubber seals keeping fluid out of the booster. This car had a very very slight leak into the booster, causing brake fluid to pool at the bottom. Over a long enough timeline, it rusted apart to the point that the booster completely separated. There was no brake application at all, and it threw a CEL due to the vacuum loss and an ESP light due to loss of travel sensor signal. Pretty interesting failure compared to most days.
Lube rack kid threw up. I felt like I opened a mummy’s crypt and let out a poison cloud.
[Vehicle owner] is a college freshman...
There was no history of the person at our shop in our records, I’d assume a DIY person. I forgot to ask the tech who worked on it if they talked to the owner or not lol
No joke these are going back in the machine. We had the same situation a few months ago and we have all the drawings to get new gears and the wheel that the bull gear is attached to. Just had to get a machine shop to make them and we could rip them apart and replace everything in a day.....my shop doesn’t do things like that...
The manager should be convincing the GM to spend a few thousand to save 10's of thousands.
Snap on, surprisingly. I bought a new tool set for school and along with this socket I got a hex head socket that wasn’t press fit correctly so the physical hex part could slide up and down and it was super loose. Was pretty surprised to find two defective sockets but my tool rep took care of it with no issues.
...this was a service body truck that had 7 50" lightbars, 4 spotlights, 2 compressors and a crane on it
So, it is a 2019 with a 1000 miles on it... The rear end is trash and has to be rebuilt. We just got these new lifts installed about 6 months ago... Our dealership is very dysfunctional with high turnover.
$8000.00 estimate from body shop and my co worker didnt bother to call customer today. We will probably try and trade him out

Runs rough complaint... Buick Century, 1995
Shocking!
My man! The hunt is over before it even began.
Is this real life?
Attempts were made.
Pop goes the weasel!
I just changed it for the guy. Now it looks like a normal truck again... Not sure how it ended up like that in the first place though
This is out of a D13 diesel out of a Volvo... It sent cylinder 5 to hell and created a 14 inch long viewing window into the side and a smaller hole on the other... That is the Air compressor and tandem pump on the ground during the tear down of the engine.
Taking torque steer to a new low.
...I was changing a center support bearing and ran into this. Was still on the vehicle working.
Chevy Silverado, all white newer model I think it was a 2015
Nothing is operable when turning the key except the CEL. A battery and a terminal is a starting point then see if anything else comes on line. I anticipate the ‘well, you’re still screwed’ phone call to take place Monday as I already warned them about.
Don’t forget to trim your exhaust pubes!
