it’s a torqueflite A-727 automatic transmission, was full of general unpleasantness (corroded aluminium / steel / i-dont-know-what).

my best guess is it was emptied of oil, filled with water and stored for decades

Customer came in with a shifting concern - duplicated concern, pulled DTC’s - several trans DTCs pending - clutch solenoids, etc.

Inspected connectors and found this nightmare: FLA battery leaking/spraying onto trans, engine / trans wiring, brake booster, subframe, frame-rails.

Yay.

Yeah we have a junkyard axle coming for it

They had drilled through each side of the plug, threaded the wire through and around the pin, and cinched it back by twisting it around itself. Not to mention, under all that masking tape are 2 shoddy splices for no good reason. Some things I will never understand...

The axle has internal brakes and one locked up. Then he decided to drive it home 2 miles. Burned off the brake pads, and boiled the gear lube untill it turned Into jello.

Very interference. IIRC all 16 rocker arms were snapped, not sure of the complete extent of damage as I didn’t deal with it after this. Manufacturer paid for a new engine several years out of warranty since it only had about 80000KM on it.

...Cause of failure was a leaking front crank seal which weakened the belt causing the teeth to strip. From what I recall it was probably closer to 2 years out of warranty, had a full dealer service history and was nowhere near the time or mileage interval for the timing belt. We were on the customers side from the start wanting to get them a new engine and eventually Holden agreed.

...aside from a cracked exhaust manifold, its oddly quiet. Ran fine, no misfires...also no upper timing chain guide anymore.
