Reddit’s Just Rolled into the Shop is a veritable cornucopia of the many wonders and oddities of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.
The funny thing is it still wouldn’t start when I was done. I was a little confused, but turns out the positive cable was also ghetto extended. It was just done a lot prettier and hidden way better with tape. I had my coworker trying to start the car while I was in the engine bay, I could hear the positive cable arcing and crackling under all the tape.
All that was laying on the floor mat, so I just picked up the floor mat.
...Dipstick tube is shot, and the dipstick itself is about 1/2" from the starter terminals...
I can honestly say this is the least of this things problems. Everything that’s painted is made of bondo basically.
Customer had vehicle “repaired” at another shop after live round was discharged in the vehicle while driving. Passing through the glove box and severed the main harness. After finding the instrument cluster left unplugged and the ecu relay swapped from a 5 pin to a 4 pin, I now found one of these white wires going to the range sensor to be improperly wired.
It’s a trash truck. They have their own ecosystem.
There’s actually just one OEM floor mat with the little hook that keeps it from sliding. It feels like there is a return spring in the pedal that isn’t returning. It needs a pedal for sure.
Nobody hurt, just someone who seemed to be on something.
We just traded it in... the previous owner... was about to go through an amputation of his right leg, got the changes made on it, and then decided to get rid of it. Only 325 miles on it.
It wasn’t secured correctly and slowly kept tilting back
...This food truck was purchased by a local man who had immediately taken it to have it converted from the normal box truck it had always been, into his new storefront. Supposedly the shop he brought it to hid the truck from him, and spent well over a year ‘working’ on it. To make a long story short, the shop owner had a heroin problem, stole parts off the truck, sold the truck owner’s extremely expensive custom generator and housing, and then disappeared.
After getting his truck back, and another terrible year full of legal battles and eventually a handsome settlement in his favor, the truck owner brought her to us. Since then, we have stripped the nightmare of a wiring job, and gotten the poor old tired Detroit Diesel running again. It’s no where near the shape it needs to be in, but it’s already night and day from this mess...
Ended up changing the waterpump and flushed the system until we decided “it was good enough”. Took forever to clean.

...When he went to pull it into his garage he wanted to show it off a little and spin the tires, a bolt on the throttle cable broke and it got stuck open...

The abs actuator [sic] on the left front had become unplugged - plugged it back in and problem solved (for now)! Good guesses everyone
...it was lowered onto a pole jack used to support the rear diff and keep the truck more stable. A tech forgot to remove the pole jack before lowering the lift.
To my amazement, just raising the lift back up worked perfectly.
My coworker was doing a thermostat on a Ford ranger. I think it was the 3 liter. He had the intake lifted slightly. Lost a screw. Heard knocking. My boss and that coworker both ran the engine for like 10 minutes listening around even though we all knew the screw was in the engine. I ended up having to replace the head because that coworker was mostly a lube tech. I pointed out that the block had some concerning scoring in the bore. My boss said put it back together. Low and behold the block was cracked...
