Last week, after getting back from a video job in The Amazon jungle I decided to go ahead and take my vacation for the year meaning most of my office co-workers didn’t see me for an entire month. I’ve made it a point to load up my Jeep and take it at least one out of state adventure each year, and this year I decided to make the pilgrimage to Telluride/Ouray, Colorado.
The drive from Dallas to Telluride isn’t the quickest so it was necessary to make a stop halfway in New Mexico, the plus side was getting to see the house that belonged to Walter White in Breaking Bad.
I made camp for the night and eagerly anticipating finally getting to Colorado the next day.
at the crack of dawn I was back ion the road and hightailed it to Telluride. I figured that if I started Imogene Pass that same day I would end up still being on the trail past sundown so I decided to make camp once again and begin the trail in the morning. I did however get some great shots of the Milkey Way!
Soon as I was able to get a good breakfast in me, I was off onto Imogene Pass
Getting to see all the abandoned mines was really something. You could spend a whole day at them finding different artifacts from the past. As the air continually got thinner and my breathing getting heavier each time I got out to get pictures, I finally made the summit.
After that it was time for the descent.
Imogene Pass is pretty easy and was a great trail to get my footing and dust off my off road prowess. The thing I loved about it the most was that you get pretty much every topography you can imagine. It’s like... one of the rings from Halo!
Next up was Black Bear Pass. The butt clincher. I was actually pretty nervous about doing it initially. After all, some guy in a 4Runner rolled over on it the previous day causing the trail to close down.
But I figured I would regret coming all the way out here to not do it. So it began.
As many of you know, BBP is pretty low key but does get harder as you approach the steps. I was at a 16 degree angle at one moment before arriving at the steps, and in a 4door Wrangler, its an.. interesting feeling.
On the steps I was obviously too preoccupied clenching my butt cheeks than to try and get pictures of going down it, and honestly I barely remember going down them as I got borderline tunnel vision while on it. But I made it down with no issue whatsoever.
Overrall I’d definitely do Black Bear Pass again. It’s true what everyone says, as long as you take your time and don’t do anything stupid you’ll be fine.
